KING’S HIGH SCHOOL

PRIZE-GIVING CEREMONY The fact that not one of the boys present had ever before attended a nigh school break-up under peace conditions was remarked on by Mr W. R. Brugh. chairman of the High Schools' Board, who presided at the annual prize-giving ceremony of the King's High School, which was held yesterday afternoon. “ You are tlte leaders of the future," Mr Brugh told the pupils, " and we look to you to maintain this peace which we have finally achieved and to do your part in making certain that war cannot come again.” Comparatively speaking, the school was young and small in numbers, he added, but it had made a fine contribution to the armed services. Mr Brugh introduced Mr H. I. Sinclair, who addressed the pupils on the link between education and citizenship. "You are living in an age of, most intensive education," he said. " Education, which was once purely academic, is now designed for the development of individual personality and as a foundation to good citizenship.” Mr Sinclair emphasised the need for self-reliance in the individual. Selfreliance tended to give a higher quality of leadership and a higher standard of citizenship, he added. If this was realised and acted upon by the boys it would become a major factor in the furtherance of their careers. It was the duty of the individual boy to aspire to the highest ievel and to cultivate a sound sense of values. “ In the complex civilisation of to-day all must co-operate," said Mr Sinclair. " Your schooling should have impressed on your minds the fact that an individual’s actions react on the community as a whole. When you go out into life, you must try to find a purpose in whatever you do. By helping others and pulling in as a team you will enrich your own lives.” The prizes won during the year were presented by Mrs Sinclair. The school orchestra and choir contributed several numbers during the afternoon.
