GENERAL’S ESCAPE
INQUIRY CONCLUDED ADDRESSES BY COUNSEL MELBOURNE. Dec. 13. The. two final days of the Bennett inquiry yesterday and to-day were taken up with addresses by Mr B. Clancy, Bennett's counsel, and Mr W. R. Dovey, who is assisting me commissioner. On completion of the addresses Mr Justice Ligertwood said he hoped his report would not be long delayed. Mr Clancy, in his address, contended that it was Bennett's duty to escape and that he was entirely justified in escaping in order to the benefit of his special Knowledge of Japanese tactics. Mr Dovey contended that Bennett, although he acted with the highest motive's, was not justified in leaving Singapore the way he did.
