WAR GRATUITIES
DANGER OF IMMEDIATE SPENDING APPEAL BY MINISTER (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Dec. 15. Acknowledging complimentary references to the Government’s decision, regarding the payment of gratuities, the Minister of Finance, Mr W. Nash, speaking at a Wellington R.S.A. gathering to-night, said that if individuals tried to collect at the same time the aggregate of £18,000,000 to which they wore entitled, the goods to purchase with the money would not be there. ■Such action might result in a black market or in their paying more for goods than they should do. Mr Nash emphasised that unless the Government continued to receive not only the co-operatiofi of the Returned Services’ Associations, but also of their individual members in this matter, the way ahead might be made more difficult, not necessarily for the Government but for the country.
