WILDING SHIELD MATCH CANTERBURY’S POOR SHOWING (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Dec. 14. Canterbury’s challenge fell well below expectations in the opening day’s play to-dav for the Wilding Shield. Hutt Valley carried off five of the six matches, and even allowing for an improvement in Canterbury’s form, appears certain to retain the shield. Features of the play were the imprescive form of R. McKenzie (Hutt), who almost annihilated R. G. Pattlnson, a keen contest between N. Edwards and A. D. Brown, both former New Zealand champions, which Edwards won in the tiiird set, and the confident doubles combination of McKenzie and Edwards, who comfortably disposed of Cant and Smith. The surprise of the day was the defeat in straight sets of Canterbury’s first doubles pair, Brown and Pattlnson, by Bold and Ramson. The form of the Canterbury players was very patchy; ill parts it was too bad to be true The following were the results of the first day’s play:— Singles McKenzie (Hutt) beat Pattlnson (Canterbury) 6—3, 6—l. Edwards (Hutt) beat Brown (Canterbury) 6—l, 6—B, 6—2. Cant (Canterbury) beat Ramson (Hutt) B—6. 6—4. „ Bold (Hutt) beat Smith (Canterbury) 6—3, 6—3. Doubles McKenzie and Edwards (Hutt) beat Cant and Smith (Canterbury) 6—2, 6—2. Bold and Ramson (Hutt) .beat Brown and Pattlnson (Canterbury) 6—o, 6—4.
