CRIME IN UPPER EGYPT
PATRIARCH SHOT DEAD BODY FOUND IN DITCH CAIRO, Oct. 1. The Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem, Archbishop Theophilus, was shot dead while visiting Upper Egypt in connection with the selection of a new Coptic Orthodox Patriarch for Egypt. His body was found in a ditch near Bush Monastery, between Beni Suef, on the Nile, and Fayoum, a wealthy resort south-west of Cairo. Several persons have been arrested. The archbishop is reported to have been negotiating for two lorries to carry the wheat crop from the monastery land. Egyptian transport workers, who had previously been employed, resented this, fearing it would endanger their livelihood.
