WANAKA
VICTORY BALL On Friday night a victory ball was held In the Wanaka Hall, and the attendance was the largest seen at any function in Wanaka for some time. The hall was effectively decorated for the occasion, and credit is due to the committee for the excellent organisation. The dress was plain and fancy, and the judges were faced with a difficult task, as some of the costumes were outstanding. The following awards were made:—Ladies, Mis H. Harris (“Witch"); men, W. Rickerby (“Maori "); best couple, Misses Grigg and Geeves (“Swaggers’); most original costume, H. Harris (" Ye Olde Frothblowers ’’).
During the evening Mr W. Scaife, on behalf of the residents, welcomed the following servicemen:—Private O. Templeton, Ordinary Seaman W. Hunt, Driver A. Bovett, A.S. St Collins. Pilot Officer W. Hunt, Private S. Smith, and Lancecorporal E Hobbs, the two last-namea having been prisoners of war in Germany. Mr W. Manson spoke on behalf of the R.S.A. Supper was served in the supper room, which had also been attractively decorated by the Ball Committee. Music was supplied by McNamara’s Band, of Cromwell.
CHILDREN’S FANCY DRESS PARTY On Wednesday evening last a children's fancy dress party was held in the Wanaka Hall, when children from Wanaka and the surrounding districts were entertained. Everything possible had been done to make the evening both enjoyable and memorable. A set tea was served at 6 p.m., as well as ice cream, sweets, and soft drinks. After supper a parade was held and the judging of the fancy costumes took place. The following prizes were awarded: —Best couple, Gaynor and Neville Harris ("Indians’’); most original girl. Nancy Anderson (" Hawaiian ”); most original boy, Jeff Galloway (" Waitemata Ale”); best bov under 10, Sandy Morris (“ Blackbird ”); best girl under 10, Beverly Sadler ("Golliwog”); best girl over 10, Beverly Hobbs (“Period Costume’); best boy over 10, Jim Faulks (“Indian ). The remainder of the evening was spent in games, some of the adults present helping to entertain the children. GOLF The following are the results of the weekly golf competitions played on the Wanaka links last Saturday :—Women s Second Championship Round and Medal Match (best scores): Mrs Morris 92—*5 —77 Mrs Harris 85—5—80. Mrs Anderson 87—6—81. Men’s Bogey Match: G. Morris 1 uo, F Jackson 2 down. Semi-final of Men’s Junior Championship: G. Morris a bye, L. Milne beat L. Robertson 2 up. THE WEATHER During the early part of last week the days were warm and conditions were very pleasant, there being an absence of the strong winds that were experienced in the previous week. A change set in late on Saturday evening, however, when rain commenced to fall, and continued throughout Sunday. Temperatures became cooler, and on Monday there was a light skiff of fresh snow on the hills, and the sky was overcast.
