EARTHQUAKE SHOCK A sharp earthquake was felt in Cromwell at approximately 4.20 on Sunday morning. There were two jolts, with about a minute between them. FIRE BRIGADE EQUIPMENT At the last meeting of the Cromwell Volunteer Fire Brigade advice was received that an allocation of 1600 feet of hose,, with instantaneous couplings, to§eth.er with the necessary standpipe, reeches and branches, had been made to the brigade. This allocation is associated with the grant of a trailer pump, which is expected to arrive in the near future. The new equipment will be of considerable benefit to the local brigade. NEW AMBULANCE The Ambulance Committee has received advice that the Cromwell district ambulance, which was purchased by public subscription, is nearing completion, and it is expected that it will be handed over to the local committee by the middle of October. SERVICEMAN WELCOMED At the dance in the Athenaeum Hall on Saturday evening the opportunity was taken to welcome home Sergeant A. Thompson, who recently returned from the Middle East after being a prisoner of war for three years and a-half. Mr W. Liddicoat, on behalf of the Ripponvale settlers, extended a welcome to Sergeant Thompson, and presented him with a suitable gift. The Mayor, Mr W. Partridge, also extended a welcome on behalf of the townspeople, and Mr W. Webb welcomed the guest on behalf of the Returned Services’ Committee. Sergeant Thompson suitably replied. CHANGE IN WEATHER There was a sharp change in the weather over the week-end, when after a fine, spring-like day on Saturday rain set in early on Sunday morning and continued until Sunday night. Conditions remained fairly mild until Sunday evening, when temperatures dropped These conditions continued until Monday morning, when there was a slight improvement, although the weather was still dull and threatening. Later, however, rain squalls swept the low country. The visitation has left a further deposit of snow on the high country, SHARP RISE IN RIVERS As a result of the steady rain over the week-end, there was a sharpe rise in both the Kawarau and Clutha Rivers. At Cromwell on Monday the Kawarau was showing a six-foot rise and the Clutha a similar rise, whilst both rivers were very discoloured. RACING DATE GRANTED The Cromwell Jockey Club has received advice that its application to hold a race meeting on Saturday, March 9, 1946, has been granted. This is a matter of considerable satisfaction to all local and district members, as this old-established club had raced uninterruptedly for 79 years until war restrictions compelled a temporary cessation of its activities.
