OPOSSUM SKIN SALE

GOOD DEMAND AT HIGHER RATES The Dunedin Stock Agents and Woolbrokers’ Association (Messrs New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., Otago Farmers’ Co-operative Association, Donald Reid and Co., Ltd., Stronach, Morris, and Co,. Ltd., Wright, Stepehnson, and Co., Ltd., National Mortgage and Agency Company, Ltd., Dalgety and Co., Ltd.) reports that the first opossum skin sale of the season was held yesterday, and catalogues comprising 140,946 skins were submitted to the usual bench of buyers. Owing to the fact that the season for trapping opened earlier than usual, the average quality of the skins was not quite up to last season’s standard. There was a fairly good demand, particularly for all grades of blues, and these sold at higher rates than was the case at the opening sale last year. Compared with the September rates of last season, the market can be quoted as follows:—Blues, 3d to 2s 6d per skin firmer; greys, 2d to 9d per skin firmer; pale greys, 2d to 6d per skin firmer; rusty greys, par to 6d per skin firmer; red necks, par to 6d per skin lower; super and first blacks, par to 9d per skin firmer; second and third blacks, 2d to lOd per skin lower; red browns, 3d to Is 4d per skin lower; dark browns, supers and firsts. 2d to lOd per skin dearer; seconds and thirds, par to 6d per skin lower. Stale, damaged, and inferior skins sold at lower rates.
