SHOPPING ARRANGEMENTS

RETAILERS TO OPEN TO-MORROW

When it became known early yesterday morning that the official announcement of Japan’s surrender would be made later in the day housewives, armed with shopping bags, besieged the provision shops of the city and suburbs. Their purchases resulted in most of the butchers’ shops being stripped bare of their contents by the time the 11 o’clock broadcast was received. Pastrycook shops also had an extremely busy morning, and pies and most other small goods were soon at a premium. All available supplies of bacon and ham in the grocery shops were just as eagerly bought up. Most of the retailers will be closed throughout to-day, but will open again to-morrow morning. Bakers, however, agreed to bake last night, and shops will be open this morning for about two hours for the sale of bread. They will then close down for the remainder of the day. Butchers’ shops in the city and suburbs closed shortly aiter midday yesterday, and will not reopen until to-morrow morning. Chemists’ shops will also remain closed to-day, and urgent prescriptions will be attended to by the All Night Pharmacy. The hotels will close to-day between 2.30 and 3.30 this afternoon.
