ADDITIONAL ALLOWANCES
“STATEMENT BY MINISTER “Within the next week or so I hope to be able to make a statement on the future petrol position, and I am hopeful, as a result of negotiations now nearing finality, that the present restrictions will be appreciably relieved and additional allowances will be made possible for the private motorist,” said the Minister of Supply, Mr Sullivan, on Monday night. “ Owing to our distance from sources of supply, it was necessary to maintain stocks of petrol in the country at a certain level to ensure we would not be left without road transport if supplies were interrupted for a period.” continued the Minister. “ Those stocks have never exceeded three or four months’ supply, and have at times been very low indeed. At no time could they be considered more than adequate to cover bare essential requirements only. “ I can only repeat my previous announcement on . Saturday that every endeavour is being made to obtain additional supplies so that the restrictions may be relaxed at the earliest possible date,” Mr Sullivan added. “The Government is fully aware of the importance of petrol' to the private motorist and the public generally, and, as I have stated, is making every effort to relieve the position without delay.”
