NOTES FROM RICCARTON

(Special) CHRISTCHURCH, May 23. Kevin is back in work, after spelling for four months, and 11. Wilson will get him ready for spring engagements. Last August he won the Islington Handicap, at the Grand National meeting, while in the previous year he was second in that race. Probably this will be his programme again, as a preliminary to the New Zealand Cup, in which he was successful last year. The programme of Atreus is in some doubt. 1-Ie is not partial to soft ground, and as he is due for a spell G. Ridgway may decide to turn him out without waiting for his Washdylce engagement. Weld Cona, in A. S. Ellis’s team, has made good progress since he resumed work. He is a Wild Chase three-year-old, who may go on to good class next season, as he shapes like staying. He has engagements at Wlngatui next month. L. J. Ellis has been offered the ride at the Auckland meeting m Olga’s Pal, who was second to Killeymoon at Marton last Saturday. C. Emerson has Double Cross, Avonbridge and Periwig training on well for early spring engagements. A couple of Battle Song yearlings are ready to come in, but shortage of labour is an obstacle at present. One of thi youngsters is Dr Louisson’s gelding from Blue Bouquet, while the other, to be raced by Mr H. N Spence, the owner of Periwig, Is from the Polazel mare Black Shadow. Justitia is going well in her work, and it will not be on the score of condition if she fails at the Dunedin meeting. A year ago, following her first success in open company, she looked a good prospect, but she has been a disappointment this season.
