MEETING OF EXECUTIVE At the weekly meeting of the executive of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce -held yesterday a report was received regarding the meeting of citizens held recently in connection with the Government’s proposal to take over the Bank of New Zealand shares, and pleasure was expressed at the success of this meeting. Copies of the resolution passed were being forwarded to the Minister of Finance (Mr Nash) and the Associated Chambers.
In respect to the manufacture of rubber tyres and tubes the following reply was received from the Bureau of Industry to -.representations made by the-* chamber: “Receipt is acknowledged of the representations which you have made to the bureau in regard to its consideration of applications for licences to engage in the manufacture in New Zealand of rubber tyres and tubes for motor vehicles. You may be assured that a very complete investigation will be made of all aspects of the proposals, and that the bureau will arrive at a decision only after earnest consideration has been given to all the matters which must be taken into account. Your representations have been noted and the procedure to be followed in connection with the consideration of the applications will be notified you at an early date.” Following the recent visit of a deputation from the chamber to Central Otago it was noted with satisfaction that several local committees had sent in further memberships. With respect to an inquiry from the chamber whether new industries being established in and around Dunedin could be guaranteed an adequate supply of water, the town clerk replied as follows: “ I have to acknowledge receipt of your letter, addressed to the city engineer relative water supply for new industries and have to advise you that your representations in this matter have been considered by the council’s Water Committee. I am directed by the committee to advise you that the city engineer is at present engaged in investigating the augmentation of the city water supply and that this work is being prosecuted as speedily as the present staff position will permit. In the meantime I am directed to assure you that in the opinion of the committee there are adequate water supplies available for new industries.”
