CROMWELL

The Weather.—After a fortnight’s springlike weather rain commenced to fall in the early hours of Saturday morning and continued steadily throughout the day. Snow fell on the higher levels. Sunday, however, brought settled conditions, with a clear sky. Shooting Season.—A large number of visiting and local sportsmen were out early for the opening of the shooting season. Ducks were plentiful and some good bags were recorded. Quail and Chukkor are also numerous, but owing to the mild weather are still high up on the mountains. A few nights’ hard frost would make the quail covey-up and come down to much lower levels.

Dog Trials.—The local dog trials will be held in Mr Perriam’s property at Lowburn to-morrow. An efficient committee has all details in hand. A dance will be held in the evening. Badminton.—The local badminton season has already commenced and the club has a membership of some 24 players. Club competitions will be held during the season.

Boy Scout Group.—A Boy Scout Cubpack group has recently been formed at Cromwell and will commence with a membership of 14. Messrs L. Redhead and A. Lawrie have been appointed as Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster respectively. Cromwell Jockey Club.—At a recent meeting of the Cromwell Jockey Club it was unanimously decided to apply for the usual two-day racing fixture. The dates applied for are March 10 and 11, 1946.

Cromwell Sale Yards.—At the first annual meeting of the Cromwell Sale Yards Company Mr W. Partridge (the chairman) presided ever a very satisfactorj’- attendance. The following are the directors for the ensuing year: Messrs A. Bell. J. Radford, C. S. Harris, H. J. Webb. W. W. Webb. J. Anderson, and J. F. Partridge Personal.—Major Yerex and Mr B. A. Vercoe, of the Department of Internal Affairs, have been spending a few days in the district.—Mr E. R. Turner (New South Wales) is at present in Cromwell on official business of the Austral-New Zealand dredge.
