MILTON

Obituary.—The death occurred on Sunday of Mrs Elizabeth Mary Fagg, wife of Mr W. E, Fagg, of Spencer street. Milton, after a lengthy illness. The deceased was born at Little River, North Canterbury, 58 years ago, and was educated at the local school. Subsequently she went to Gisborne, where 35 years ago she married Mr Fagg at Christchurch. The young couple returned to Gisborne and later removed to VVairuna, South Otago, where Mr Fagg engaged in farming pursuits, About 20 years ago they came to Milton to reside. Mrs Fagg was interested in tlie Anglican Church and was a valued member of the Mothers' Union. She is survived by her husband, and four daughters and four sons, namely, Messrs Henry and Leslie (both recently returned from overseas), Walter (Mosgiel), and Albert (R.N.Z.A.F., England), Mrs L. Rose (Wellington), Mrs E. R. Anderson (Milton), Miss Rosie Fagg (Milton) and Miss Doris Fagg (Wellington).—Tlie death on Monday morning of Mrs Catherine J. Falconer, wife of Mr David C. Falconer, removes a descendant of one of the earliest families to settle in die Tokomairiro district. The deceased, who was 73 years of age, was the fourth daughter of the

late James and Margaret Drinnan, who came to New Zealand in 1858. She was bom at Milton and educated at the Toko District High School, and in 1915 was married to Mr Falconer. They first settled in the Moneymore district, where they lived until about 12 years ago, when they removed to Tokoiti road. Mrs Falconer was a staunch Presbyterian and a member of the , Early Settlers' Association and the Women's Institute. She is survived by her husband. Toko Domain Board.—The annual meeting of the Toko Domain Board was attended by Messrs G. H. Thomson (chairman), J. Allison, N. Drinnan, C. Keinan, R. M. Rutherford, J. Gray, E. Ransome and J. j Stewart, The report showed thbt the ; policy adopted during the year had been one of maintenance only, lack of funds precluding any improvements. The amount spent in wages (£149 15s 7d) had been i £24 15s 7d above the estimate, but the I committee recommended no reduction In the hours worked by the caretaker. The income of the board appeared to be inadequate, and it was suggested that the levies on local bodies be increased. The credit balance had fallen from £lO 5s lOd to £1 10s 4d, with unpaid accounts amounting to £l3 10s, and £5 10s owing to the board. The estimate for the current year were approved, as follows: Receipts: Balance £1 10s 4d, rent £57 10s, camp fees £5, sundry £4; levies — Milton Borough Council £IOO, Bruce County Council £65. Expenditure: Wages £l9O, salary (two years) £2O, Insurance £l, materials £5. trees and seeds £3, sundries £3, grass cutting £6, estimated credit £s.—Mr G. H. Thomson was reelected Chairman for the ensuing year.— Messrs F. Cheyne and J. Purvis (representing the South Otago Women’s Hockey Association) waited on the board with a request that the association be given conrol of Taylor Park. The association desired, at its own expense, to make the ground Into two playing areas and to erect a pavilion. Tlie school children could still use the ground. It was decided that two representatives from the board, the association and the Milton and Bruce clubs should meet on the ground to discuss the position. Tlie rental was fixed at £5 per year, reducible to £3 for the first year. Messrs Ransome and Clayton were appointed the board's delegates with power to act.—Messrs T. M. Scott, W. Sligo and S. J, Ottrey comprised a deputation from the Toko Farmers' Club with a request that the club’s show ground and the adjacent football ground be amalgamated so as to .give more space for show purposes and also make one or two grounds available for football, etc. The ownership of the land would not be interfered with in any way. It was proposed to remove the belt of trees and extend the show-ring to the area at present used as the football ground. The fencing on the football ground would not be a fixture. Messrs Ransome and Clayton were appointed to meet the Farmers’ Club committee to discuss details and report back to the board. —The Toko High School Committee applied for use of Taylor Park and for improved facilities at the baths, including life-saving equipment. The first request was granted and the matter of providing life-saving equipment was referred to the Toko Swimming Club.—Members stood in silence as a mark of respect to the memory of Mr H. M. Driver, an ex-member of the board.

Rugby Football.—The unfavourable weather on Saturday caused a postponement of Junior Grade matches in South Otago, but two senior games were played. As the result of a telephone conversation between the secretary of the Toko Club and the president of the Clutha Club the senior match between these clubs was not played. Later, advice was received that the matches must be played, but attempts to raise a team at this stage proved unsuccessful. Next Saturday's fixtures will be as follows.—Seniors: Toko v. Crescent, at Milton; Clinton v. Valley at Clydevale; Clutha v. Catllns, at Ow’aka. Second Grade: Union v. Clutha. at Balclutha; Clinton, a bye. Third Grade: High School v- Valley, at Clydevale; Toko v. Crescent, at Kaitangata; Clutha, a bye.
