AN IMPORTANT ROLE
AUSTRALIAN AIR FORCE OPERATIONS AGAINST JAPANESE (Rec. 11 p.m.) MELBOURNE, May 22. Australia’s First Tactical Air Force, at present based on Morotai Island, in the Halmahera Group, has been allotted an important role in operations against the Japanese in the Southwest Pacific area. Units of the force, including Liberator heavy bombers, rocket flying Beaufighters, Spitfires, and Kitty hawks, are now using the newly-captured aerodrome on Tarakan (Borneo). These Australian-manned aircraft will thus be able to strike against enemy oil installations, shipping, airfields and supply centres throughout the Netherlands East Indies. Thfe activities of this force from Morotai during the past six months made possible the present operations on Tarakan.
