NEW ROAD WANTED
DUNEDIN TO PORT CHALMERS BOROUGH’S REPRESENTATIONS The Port Chalmers Borough Council on Monday night decided to make urgent representations to the Minister of Works (Mr R. Semple) asking that the work of construction of a new road from the city be commenced in the near future. It was emphasised during the discussion that with any abnormal downpour of rain such as occurred on Saturday, the present road was either blocked by slips or rendered dangerous, even though traffic was able to negotiate it. The opinion was expressed that apart from the number of slips that had already taken place as the result of Saturday’s rain other sections of the road would require attention involving the employment of a number of men who could be better used in making a new highway. Councillors also stressed the fact that a survey had been made and it was felt that there were no great difficulties in the way of making a start on the construction of a new road in the near future. It was stated that the Mayor of Dunedin (Mr D. C. Cameron) had given an assurance that the scheme would have the support of the city, while a number of bodies had also given the Port Chalmers Council similar assurances.
