SHIPPING FREIGHTS
LONDON TO NEW ZEALAND INCREASED BY ONE-THIRD (P.A.) AUCKLAND, May 22. Shipping freight rates from London to New Zealand have been increased by 3J5 1-3 per cent., states cabled advice received from London by the Bureau of Importers. This rise makes a war-time increase of 100 per cent. , , The bureau states that no Indication is given whether the increases apply only to the New Zealand trade. Although the reason for the increases is not given, the view was expressed in commercial circles to-day that it was attributable to the tightness of the shipping position. „ , ~ It was also suggested that the rise might be due to the falling off in New Zealand’s imports from Britain which had so reduced cargoes that ships recently came to New Zealand in oallast.
