QUEENSTOWN

Red Cross Society.—At the annual meeting of the Queenstown branch of the Red Cross Society, Mrs J. P. Fix presided. The annual report • showed that 186 articles had been knitted during the year, consisting of 56 pullovers, 37 balaclavas. 37 scarves, and 32 cranwells. Eleven cartons of clothing for ihe distressed people in Europe were sent to Dunedin. Parcels had been sent quarterly to prisoners of war. A contribution oi £5 was received from the Girls’ Sports Club towards the funds. The activities of the nursing division were covered in a separate report. Much credit for the success of this division was given to the lecturer. Dr W. A. Anderson. Thanks to Mrs P. C. Williams, the home nursing class had gained creditable passes. The hygiene and sanitation class was specially complimented by the Dunedin Centre. Mrs P. Anderson (lady superintendent) conducted the oral examinations in this section. Sister Henderson also gave of her tjme and experience. The credit balance of the branch was £23 11s sd. Historical Record The committee set up to collect information for the purpose of compiling a history of Lake County met on Friday. Mr D. H. Coekburn presided. Reports furnished by the delegates present showed that although progress had been made, they were meeting with considerable difficulty owing to some extent to war conditions. It was confidently hoped, however, that the sources of information already tapped and in contemplation would help greatly towards the attainment of the object. The chairman appealed to the delegates assiduously to apply themselves to their tasks, and he also hoped that old residents living away, from the district would furnish- any information that would prove useful. The Mayor of Arrowtcwn, Mr W. Gibb, was added to the committee. Mr E. R. Hopwoqd “tvasrappointed':”treasurer;, and ;,he agreed to carry on the duties of secretary until a permanent appointment was made. Soldiers Honoured.—A dance was held in the Lower Shotover Public Hall to honour Pte. Jim Paton, who is going overseas, and Sgt. A. Wallace and Sapper Jack Wallace, who recently returned. There was a very large attendance of district and town residents. Mr J. Bagrie, chairman of the Shotover Soldiers’ Committee, Dr Anderson, and Mr W. Gibb, chairmen of the Queenstown and Arrow Soldiers’ Committees respectively, and Mr M. Elliott, president of the Arrow R.S.A., were:the speakers. Mr Elliott presented a small parcel to Pte. Paton on behalf . of the Arrow branch of the Women’s Division, and Mr Bagrie handed monetary gifts to the Wallace brothers. The recipients suitably replied. ■ ..• . Transport Licensing.—A sitting of the Transport Licensing Authority (Mr V. Raines) was held last week.. Renewals of continuous goods licences were granted to Glenorchy Motors, Ltd., and James Shaw (Arrowtown). Renewals of taxi-cab licences were granted to the Mount Cook Tourist Company, J. Shaw (Arrowtown), and Wakatipu Road and Transport Service Queenstown, and a rental car licence was’ granted to the Queenstown Motor Company. Rotary Club.—The guest speaker at the last meeting of the Queenstown Rotary Club was the Rev. J. Watson. His subject, “The Strength and Weakness of Russia,” was ably handled.
