TROTTING NOTES

By Sentinel

The next Trotting Conference will meet on July 12, and notices of motipn and the proposed dates for next season must reach the secretaiy not later than May 31. Harold Logan was 10 years old when he first won the New Zealand Trotting Cup, 11 years old when he won the second time, and 12 years old when he finished fifth after a bad run.

If Mister Ted is produced for the Sapling Stakes it will mark F. J. Smith’s fourth attempt to win the race. He was third in 1933 with Chancellor to War Buoy and Village Guy; second with Sandusky to Twos Loose in 1937; and second with Karnak to Captain Morant in 1942. Master Ted appears to be the best candidate Smith has in his stable.

Town Talk, a filly by Dillon Hall from Bonnie Barbara, will be produced by M. Holmes for ihe Sapling Stakes. Bonnie Barbara was got by Jack Potts—Barbara Worth, by Rey de Oro—Logan Chimes, by Logan Pointer—Curfew Bell, by Wildwood. Bonr.ie Barbara is also the dam of Karnak (second to Captain Morant in the Sapling Stakes) and Bel Hamed. Excluding the Sapling Stakes, 165 horses have been nominated for the remaining events on the Ashburton Trotting Club’s programme, and all fields have ample material to ensure interesting racing. As usual, the maiden events for trotters and pacers and for improving pacers have attracted large nominations, and these three races account for 102 entries. Provided weather conditions are reasonable, this should be a highly successful meeting for the Ashburton Club.
