PROPELLER DAMAGED

MINOR ACCIDENT TO TAMAHINE (P.A.) BLENHEIM. May 19. The Cook Strait ferry steamer Tamahine put back to Picton last night after striking an obstruction of an undisclosed nature near the inner entrance to Torv Channel with her port propeller. The mishap occurred about 11.30, approximately 20 minutes after the vessel had left Picton for Wellington, with over 200 passengers on board. As the port propeller appeared to have been stripped of its blades, the master. Captain W. J. Hill, in view of the conditions in the straits, decided to return to Picton. where the ship berthed without assistance about 1 a.m. The majority of the passengers, who were unaware of the incident, were surprised on awakening this morning to find themselves at Picton instead of Wellington. After an examination by the Marine Department the Tamahine sailed at 10.30 to-day for Wellington, where the work of replacing the damaged screw was undertaken. Her customary time table is not expected to be interrupted. .
