Plunket Ball. —The • annual ball, under the auspices of the Balclutha branch of the Plunket Society, attracted a large attendance, and the door receipts were about £IOO. One of the attractive feaures of the society’s annual ball is the presentation of debutantes, and this year there were 12, who were received by Lady Sidey, of Dunedin (vice-president of the Dominion Council) and introduced by Mr A. R. Dreaver. They were Misses Beverley Aitken, Noeline Barron, Roma Clode, Olive Jack Daphne Carmody, Rachel Donaldson, Joyce Kirkness, Nola O’Hara, Daphne Scott, Nessie Sutherland, Doreen Tweedie, and Nola Wyber. At the conclusion of the presentation ceremony, Mr D. M. Henderson, on behalf of the Balclutha branch, thanked Lady Sidey for her attendance and called for three cheers for the debutantes. Lady Sidey complimented the debutantes, 'and then briefly traced the origin of the society since its inception on May 14, 1907. , Music for the dancing was provided by the Caledonian Band, with extras by Mrs H. Major, Misses F. Drake, X. Murray, and B. Aitken. The duties of ffiC.’s were carried out by Messrs R. Chalmers, B. Gold, and A. R. Dreaver.

War Loan,—The total war loan subscriptions to date in Balclutha, including National Savings investments, amount to about £2OOO in the 1945 Victory Loan. This is a poor response-so far, the quota being £67,000. Sale of Work.—The annual sale of work and produce in aid of the funds of the Presbyterian Church was held on Friday. and although no final figures are available a good return is anticipated.
