SUGAR SHORTAGE
PRODUCTION IN 1 PHILIPPINES DISLOCATED BY JAPANESE (Rec. 7 p.m.) MANILA, May 18. "At least five years will elapse before the Philippines again produces appreciable quantities of sugar,” Lieutenantcolonel Rauh, Civil Affairs’ Executive Officer, said to-day. “No sugar was grown during the Japanese occupation and there is no sugar in the fields. Consequently, seedlings must be replanted.” Lieutenant-colonel Rauh said that this was only one instance of the Japanese dislocation of the Philippines’ economic life. Food for 20, per cent, of the population must be imported at present.
