THE WEEK-END FLOODS
Sir,—Dunedin this week-end lias had a very narrow escape from serious overflowing and flooding of the Leith. It is many moons since the Otago Harbour Board widened its portion of the stream bed, and in our escape this week-end our thanks are due to the Harbour Board, but only censure is owing to the City Council for not widening its portion of the stream bed, which it was supposed to do long ago. Had tire City Council kept up with the Harbour Board and done its widening Lindsay Creek’s waters would have got away more readily and probably the creek would not have flooded nearly so much as it has done.
I want to take this opportunity to warn the Citv Council of the grave danger it is permitting to exist in many of our streets in the form of large concrete walls, tire remains of air raid shelters. These matters have been left unattended for too long, and further delay should not be tolerated. We do not want an explanation that there are no labour and materials, because this is not true to-day, and a large advertisement for labour in the newspapers will prove my claim if necessary.— I am. etc.. Tired of Waiting. Dunedin, May 20.
