MUNICIPAL HOUSING

COTTAGES FOR ELDERLY PERSONS TENDERS TO BE CALLED “Tenders can now be called for the erection of cottages for elderly persons in receipt of low incomes,” said Cr W. B. Taverner (chairman of the Finance Committee) at last night’s meeting of the City Council. The Mayor (Mr D. C. Cameron) congratulated the Finance Committee on the successful issue to its efforts to secure approval for such a proposal. He said that the work which was now to be undertaken as a part of the municipal housing programme was both necessary and overdue. Cr J. McCrae, while endorsing the Mayor’s view, suggested that the need was infinitely greater than the amount of the approved loan suggested. " You can build and build and build for many years yet,” he said, “ without fulfilling the demand that exists.” Cr Taverner said it was gratifying to be able at last to make a start on this small but relatively important scheme, but he could not help feeling that it was a great pity that they should be embarking on it at a time when costs were so high and materials so scarce.
