REDUCED TRAIN SPEEDS

DAMAGED BRIDGES IN SOUTH CANTERBURY PROGRESS OF REPAIR WORK Within three weeks works on the bridges on the South Island main railway line which were damaged by floods early this month should be completed, and trains will then resume their normal speeds over a long section in South Canterbury. Four railway bridges were so. severely damaged and washed out by the floods that reconstruction was necessary. The bridge builders are at present working two shifts daily —one in the early morning and one in the afternoon —so as to allow full traffic to be maintained in the middle of the day. The bridge at Hinds has been reconstructed. The bridge south of Temuka, over which portion of the line all trains in recent weeks have proceeded slowly, will probably be finished next week, and the bridges at Arowhenua and also between Rangitata and Orari will, it is expected, be completed within three weeks. ’ Speed restrictions have been strictly adhered to over the damaged sections of the line, and delays of one hour are still experienced on trips between Christchurch and Timaru. ,
