WOMEN’S CHRISTIAN TEMPERANCE UNION

The South Dunedin branch met on Thursday last, when Mrs Rippin presided, and Mrs Smith conducted the opening service. Mrs Hazelwood was welcomed after some years’ absence in Auckland. Mrs Rippin read an excellent report of the doings of the annual conference held in the Baptist Church. This showed that over 4000 names were on the rolls of Dominion members, and that Mrs Peryman, for so long the editor of the White Ribbon, had resigned through failing health. Greetings had beer, received from kindred organisations in England and America. The report showed also that Band of Hope work was ably sponsored by Miss Jamieson, who had produced a book on medical temperance for that end. Jn the course of a discussion on the recent meeting of the New Zealand Alliance (Dunedin branch), members agreed that while the W.C.T.U. as an organisation was against corporate or State control of the liquor traffic, the decisions of several churches in a seemingly opposite direction had been arrived at in an honest effort to find ultimately the best methods to ensure that the Dominion may become truly temperate. The monthly meeting of the North-East Valley branch was held on Thursday afternoon. Devotions were led by Mrs Peart. A comprehensive report on the business dealt with by the recent convention was presented by Miss Gibbs.
