MOUNT RUAPEHU

INCREASED ACTIVITY COLUMN OF STEAM DOUBLED (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Mar. 23. Voicanic activity in the crater of Ruapehu has increased considerably. The vent in the islet in the crater lake has grown larger, and yesterday large and small rocks were being thrown out to the edge of the crater. Mr Angus Manson, a guide at the Chateau Tangariro, spent four hours making a circuit of the crater yesterday. Speaking of the crater explosions, he said, “It was like shrapnel fire.” While Mr Manson was climbing round the crater one te.rrific explosion sent a shower of big rocks 1000 feet into the air. These rocks, he said, did not fall outside the crater, but dropped back into the lake. The steam column has now more thah doubled, and so much steam is pouring from the whole lake that the new vent is scarcely visible.
