THE CHURCH-ENDOWED CHAIRS

Sir,—To my mind it is only right that the Presbyterian Board of Property should inquire into the religious beliefs and morals of a man applying for the position of one of the chairs endowed by it. It is unthinkable that the board should appoint as a professor in our University a man who is an atheist or a rationalist. What a man believes he will teach. It is well known that many men enter our colleges and universities in New Zealand and there lose all their religious beliefs. Some of the recent professors in the University have done a great disservice to the cause' of religion and patriotism in our city. The Church in the past has been much too lenient, and I for one would like to see her exercise more control. Would the Church of England or the Roman Catholic Church have shown the same leniency? They would not' Some of the critics even suggested handing over the endowment money to the University. This, I hope, will never be done. One would like to know what is at the back of this agitation. Is it religious or political? I do not intend to carry this discussion any further. —I am. etc., A Presbyterian Woman. Dunedin, March 23.
