THE WELFARE OF ANIMALS

Sir, —There are many inaccuracies in the report of the inspector (Mr Hinchcliff) to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals respecting a crate of cats consigned from Seacliff to the Medical School. The crate was a box with a wooden lid and wire netting sides. It was on the station platform all day. The first part of the morning was fine, but round about 11.30 the weather changed and it became stormy with driving rain and a bitterly cold wind. About 2 p.m. I asked the" stationmaster if the cats could be put under cover and he explained that that was impossible as there was no place to put them. I then offered the loan of some sacks and with the stationmaster's permission one of the lads came and got them. That was the only cover provided and it was not provided by either the consignor or consignee. This proves conclusively that these cats were boxed up and left in driving rain without cover for hours, and would have been left for several hours longer in that state if cover had not been provided.—l am, etc., Seacliff, <March 21. Mrs T. M. Wilson.
