ART IN NEW ZEALAND

The February-March issue of The Arts in New Zealand claims attention both pictorially and in its varied read; ing matter. Illustrations are presented of the work of John Weeks (with an appreciation by Jess Whitworth), Helen Brown, Olivia Spencer-Bower, John Lillicrap, Frances Hunt, S. B. Maclennan, and Roland Hipkins. A reproduction of a strong portrait in oils of a member of the Maori Battalion by Roy Dickison gives weight, to an appreciation of that young artist’s work by “Senior.” The literary contents include “ The Amateur Stage,” by Arthur Sewell, “ The Auckland School of Art, by Dr Beeby—in some degree a reply to a previous article on that subject; “Film Thoughts from Queen Annes Time,” 'by James Harris, and The Borovansky Ballet,” by Estelle Beere. An anticipatory chapter is given from a war book by J. Henderson, which is due to appear this month. There is verse by Helen Brookfield and Paula Hanger, and the usual art notes from various centres.
