NEW AIR SERVICE

LONDON TO SOUTH AFRICA BEGINNING IN JULY CAPETOWN, (Rec. 10.30 p.m.) Mar. 21. The target date for the start of the London-South African air service was July, said the Minister for Transport, Mr F. C. Sturrock. ! It would be a parallel service with 8.0.A.C. between London and Johannesburg, which would be South Africa’s international airport,. Planes would take 45 hours for the trip and the service in the beginning would be weekly, although it was hoped that the traffic would soon justify a daily service. Avro-York planes would at first be used, • changing to Tudors'as these became availafile.

A tentative route was Johannesburg, Kasama (until Salisbury aerodrome is ready), Nairobi, Khartoum, Cairo, Malta (ultimately Rome), and London. Planes would fly day and night, stopping only to refuel. Probably only surcharge mail would be carried, the heaviest mail still going by sea.
