SOLDIERS’ PAY
Sir, —I agree with " Fair Play (3rd Echelon) ” in that part of his letter supporting other writers on the extra Is per day for soldiers, but I do not agree with him in accusing the soldiers now serving and receiving the extra Is per clay of being conscripted into the army after sitting back in good, cushy jobs with high pay. It is now nearly six years since volunteers were called for. What show did the majority of the lads serving now overseas have of enlisting? None at all. Besides, there is still a good number of volunteers overseas that did not even get the opportunity of leaving New Zealand before the 7th and Bth reinforcements sailed, let alone our lads who went to the islands and are now in Italy. In conclusion, I say let " Fair Play ” scold the Government, but give credit to these lads of ours who are doing every bit as good a job as we did, and perhaps better.—l am, etc., Fair Tactics (2nd Echelon).
