SWIMMING CARNIVAL

No fewer than 12 holders of New Zealand swimming titles will appear in the interprovincial swimming contest between teams from Otago and Southland at the Municipal Baths on Saturday night. The Oago team will be almost, identical with that which won the W3r Memorial Shield at Wellington in January, and the Southland swimmers include those who performed so well to be runners-up. Southland has a very strong representation in the Junior Boys’ division in which.! it practically swept the pool at the New Zealand Championships, and among its competitors in this class is G. W. Knight, breaststroke champion and record-holder," ~ H. Harland, J. Wilson, and W. Pasley, all New Zealand champions. Otago will be represented by ’ two New Zealand champions in Misses H. Forsyth and L. Kearns in the 75 Yards Junior Girls” * Breaststroke, and in the Intermediate boys’ class, the Otago competitors include ' L. Wilson, G. Sinclair, and R. J. Isaacs, f; all holders of New Zealand titles. Miss 1 * Mayzod Reid, twice winner of the New Zealand Intermediate Girls’ Diving Championship, and Miss M. Payne, New Zealand junior champion will compete in the ! diving events, and J. Macdonald, who will represent Southland in the intermediate boys’ events, is the present New Zealand ... backstroke champion in this class. Miss » N. Lane, one of Otago’s women competi- • J tors, has the distinction of holding backstroke records in each of three divisions. . * There will be a water polo match and a ■;: relay, and the Southland team Is presenting an amusing novelty event. Th» Mayor (Mr D. C. Cameron) will open the ' ! - carnival and pipers from the Burns Pipe Band will head a parade of the teams. ;
