AUSTRALIAN SHEARERS

DECISION TO RESUME WORK

AWAITING NEW AWARD (Rec. 7 p.m.) SYDNEY, Mar. 20. The New South Wales secretary of the Australian Workers’ Union stated that shearers from all parts of New South Wales had decided at a conference to return to work one week before the Arbitration Court sat to hear the union’s application for variation of their award. They also decided to demand that judgment should be given within 14 days after the completion of the hearing and that if the judgment was unsatisfactory they would again strike. About 40 sheds are at present involved in the strike. The men are demanding 50s for shearing 100 sheep and also 40 hours a week. They at present receive 41s 9d a hundred and work 44 hours a week. The Queensland shearers did not resume work yesterday although they decided for resumption by a secret ballot by a two to one majority last week.
