CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

MONTHLY MEETING

The meeting of the council of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce yesterday was attended by Messrs A P. Greenfield (president), C. J. Darracott, H. Archbold, A. B. Callender, J. F. Poole, D. H. Shortt, A. C. Stephens, L. M. Satterthwaite. L. F. B. Titchener, E. H. Calder, M. Poulter, F. M. Halstead, W. S. Armitage, H. H. Forward, J. G. Souness, and W. H. Naylor. The death of Mr A. F. Cheyne, of Mosgiel, a member of the chamber, was the subject of a motion of condolence, and the customary tribute was paid to one whom the chairman described as a valuable member of the business community. An acknowledgment was received from the registrar of the University of Otago, of the offer of an annual prize of £3 3s. Details of the terms of the award are awaited. Pilfering of Cargo It was decided to give further publicity to the matter of the inadequacy of many • packing containers at present in use, with a view to reducing the incidence of cargo pilfering. The chairman said the whole question of pilfering had been investigated, and there was now little more the chamber could do in the way of altering the situation. He thought greater care in packing would help, and stated that, judged from recent reports, pilfering was not so general as it had been some months ago. A suggestion was made that greater supervision was necessary, as all types of packing, even wired wooden cases, were subject to interference. Social Credit Advertising In the matter of the challenge offered by regular Social Credit advertising, the Associated Chambers advised that they were unable to undertake sustained advertising in reply, but an assurance was given that a statement would be published in due course. It was decided that nothing further could be done in the matter in the meantime. Licensing Commission The meeting approved the unanimous decision of the executive that the tendering of evidence before the Licensing Commission was not a matter in which the chamber could take an active part, and it was decided to inform the Associated Chambers that the Dunedin Chamber had no suggestions to make. Releases from the Army The chairman reported that no further 1 information was available on the subject of the acute shortage of female labour and the possibility of securing necessary releases from the army to meet the situation. The Associated Chambers had been asked to consider making representations to the armed forces. “ Public lU-hcalth ” It was reported that Dr Helen Deem, medical adviser to the Plunket Society, had agreed to deliver an address on April 18 on *' Public 111-health.” It was decided to make the meeting an open one for members and their wives, and to secure the Tudor Lounge, Savoy, for the purpose. Alteration to Rules Alterations to the rules permitting of country membership at a subscription of not less than one guinea were submitted by the executive. The council confirmed the association's action, and it was decided to refer the proposals to a genera' meeting of members at a future date. The chairman stated that the amend ments were the result of a decision tc make a drive for a wider membership among country business men, in connec tion with which the president and vice president proposed making a tour o country districts.
