Acceptances for the Waimate meeting are due to-day. Gold Lance travelled fast at Oamaru, but. collapsed after going a mile. Plutocrat made his best showing so far when he finished in a place in two races at Oamaru. Espadrille drew No. 11 at the barrier in the Trial Stakes at Oamaru, and failed to emerge from the ruck. Miss Hula found seven furlongs too iar for her at Oamaru. She was the leader up to the home turn, but then commenced to fade.
According to reports Typhoon has completely cramped the market on the Great Easter Handicap and Great Autumn Handicap double. An unnamed three-year-old gelding ranking as a full-brother to Lambourn and a half-brother to Gulf Stream and Beau Partir was sold at the Wellington sales for 200gns. 4 At the Wellington sales the brood mare Muff, a half-sister to Silver Scorn, went at 20gns. Muff carried a service by Parchment, but was foaled in 1926.
A yearling colt by Nightly from Gay Vixen was offered at the Wellington sales, and fell to a bid of 90gns from T. J. Eoyle, of Heddon Bush. Gay Vixen was got by Gallant Fox —All Style, by Gay Lad. Gallant Fox was got by Hunting Song. Receptive was not overlooked in the betting, when she ran at Oaamru. She failed to finish nearer than sixth, but the support suggests that she had been responsible for good track work. Receptive Is a four-year-old filly by Siegfried from Receipt, by Paper MoneySatisfaction.
There W3s support for Lord Roland in his race at Oamaru, but the best he could do was a fair third. Lord Roland Is a threc-year-old gelding by Defaulter from Privet, an Australian mare by Rizzio— Tiger Rose, by Rossendale. Rizzio is an imported horse by Cicero Since 1907 the North Island Challenge Stakes has been won by 17 two-year-olds Horses over that age who have scored wins include Desert Gold, Silver Link Gloaming, (three times), Grand Knight, Reremoana, Silver Ring, and Kindergarten (three times). The number oi wins scored by two-year-olds shows that it takes an exceptionally good horse above that age to win. ~ , „ Typhoon put up one of the best performances at the Wellington meeting, and. incidentally, showed the danger of a premature declaration of weights. Under a high scale of weights Typhoon 10.0 gave 121b~and a beating to Beau Cheval, who won the Middle Park Plate under 10.0 in Imin ll 4-ssec. In spite cf the fact that Typhoon put up such a meritorious performance, he escapes a penalty for the Great Easter Handicap, in which he meets Beau Cheval on 111 b better terms over the same distance. Such a state of affairs would be impossible if publication of the handicaps had been delayed until after the Wellington meeting. Typhoon also escapes a penalty for the Great Au.umii Handicap, and now meets First In on 6n better terms than when they ran a deadheat In the Metropolitan Handicap, when they met at a light scale of weights. Typhoon is a big. strong horse and has an advantage at a hieh scale of weights He has a drop of 191 b in Great Easter Handicap, and one of 181 b in the Great Autumn Handicap compared with the weight he carried at Wellington. In the circumstances it is right to place a rehandlcan on other win ners should have been exercised.
