FALL FROM EXPRESS
MAORI FATALLY INJURED
Fatal injuries were received by a Maori when he fell from the Auch-land-Wellington express train on Friday evening. He was Mr Kahanui te Ruki, aged 45, labourer, of Te Kuiti. The accident occurred when the train was travelling at a high speed a short distance south of Ohaupo. Shortly after the train left Frankton Mr Ruki purchased a ticket from the guard, who then had no change. When the express reached Te Awamutu the guard searched for Mr Ruki in order to give him the change, but could not find him. The police were notified, and with a railwayman a member of the Te Awamutu police force went north by jigger and found Mr Ruki alongside the line. The injured man, who was suffering from concussion and a fractured spine, was taken by a mixed train to Frankton and then by ambulance to the Waikato ospital, where' he died at midnight on Saturday.
