MOPPING-UP ON IWO JIMA (Rec. 9 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Mar. 18. Admiral Nimitz’s communique states: “ The marines on Iwo Jima to-day mopped up isolated remnants of the enemy garrison in rugged terrain in the northern part of the island. Marine uniforms were again found on enemy soldiers, one of whom stopped one of our ambulances, wounded the driver, and escaped. Snipers continue to be active.

“Army fighters to-day bombed and strafed barges and radio and radar facilities on Chichi Jima. Army Liberators on Friday and Saturday bombed an airfield on Chichi Jima. Liberators without opposition bombed Shimushiro and the Kuriles on Saturday. Fighters, dive-bombers, and torpedo p.lanes yesterday bombed radio towers, an airstrip, and other targets on Yap, and marine aircraft on Saturday and yesterday attacked Babelthuap, in the Palaus.”
