BOOKMAKING CHARGES
FINE OF £4OO IMPOSED LARGE AMOUNT TAKEN IN BETS (P A ) PALMERSTON N., Mar. 19. A fine of £4OO was imposed to-day on Victor Hannah, a salesman, aged 37. on'a charge of bookmaking. Detective Long said that when the accused’s premises were raided on Saturday 536 bGts, totalling £922, had been taken. The accused was recognised as one of the biggest bookmakers in the city. His four previous fines for bookmaking totalled £675. The magistrate (Mr H. P. Lawry) said the fines in the case of the accused were getting into a region where he could expect fines no longer. John Douglas Pollard, a mechanic, aged 33, was fined £IOO on a charge of bookmaking.
