PATRIOTIC GOODS
OVERSEAS CONSIGNMENTS
Most New Zealanders enjoy a cup of tea. To the members of the New Zealand forces in the forward areas overseas it is more than welcome. It is provided free for these men, and the supplies required to make this possible is no small item for the National Patriotic Fund Board. In the past five months 13,1901 b of tea have been sent overseas for this purpose. The schedule includes other items with an appeal to the palate, such as, for example, 44,1101 b of cake. 81,3261 b of biscuits, 23521 b of butter, 21921 b of horifey for hospital patients, and 56,7001 b of sugar. In addition, in the five months 11,2881 b of toffee, barley sugar, s and lemon drops were forwarded; also 6642 bottles of cordials, and 100,528 tins of milk, cocoa and milk, and coffee and milk. Another big item was fruit crystals. Sufficient of these were sent to make up 200,064 gallons of fruit drinks enough for over 3,000,000 glasses. & Gift parcels contributed by the patriotic zones throughout the Dominion comprised another big item. In the five months 91,650 of these were shipped. The goods mentioned do not represent by any means all the items that are consigned overseas by the Patriotic Board. These cover a wide range. They include sports gear, woollen comforts, radios, musical instruments, indoor games, writing materials, books and magazines, equipment for the kinema plants, mobile canteens, clubs and recreation centres, as well as sheepskin jackets and other warm clothing for naval personnel, and also a substantial quantity of goods purchased on behalf of the New Zealand clubs operating overseas for the benefit of New Zealand service personnel. The value of the consignments sent overseas in the past five months was approximately £ 105,655.
