RED CROSS CONTROVERSY

FURTHER JOINT STATEMENT (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Mar, 17. The following joint statement was issued to-day by Mr W: Perry M.L.C., deputy chairman of the National Patriotic Fund Board, Sir James Elliot, chairman of the joint council of the Order of St. John and New Zealand Red Cross Society, and Mr J. Spears, chairman of the War Purposes Committee of the Joint Council, in a rejoinder to the reply made by Mr B. J. Jacobs, Dominion president of the R.S.A., to a statement made by them on Thursday regarding the appointment of Major C. Meachen as Red Cross Commissioner in the Middle East:— “ ‘ The salient point of the statement,’ says Mr Jacobs, ‘ is the admission that a mistake has been made.’ Our statement did not admit that a mistake had been made in the appointment of Major Meachen. Our words were —‘even if a mistake were made.’ Our use of the subjunctive mood was deliberate.”
