LYTTELTON WATERFRONT

WORK ON SATURDAY AFTERNOON DECLINED BY UNION (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Mar. 17. When the usual order was issued by the Union Steam Ship Company this morning for the waterside workers to return to work at 1 p.m., the foreman was informed on behalf of the men that they would not resume work after lunch. There is a suggestion that this action means that in future no work will be done on Saturday afternoon or Sunday. There is only one vessel in port, the interisland steamer. It was stated that the executive of the Lyttelton branch of the Waterside Workers’ Union favoured refusal of Sunday work only, and considered that members should work on Saturday afternoons, as the provisions in the agreement with the employers were involved in the latter instance. In 1925 the Lyttelton branch of the union decided not to work on Saturday afternoons, and this held good for about 18 months.
