BOWLING CHAMPIONSHIPS
PATTERSON WINS SINGLES PAIRS TO PALMERSTON The finals of the Singles and Pairs in the North Otago Bowling Centre’s Champion of Champions competitions were played on Saturday at the Phoenix green, W. Patterson winning the Singles and J. Haggle and H. W. Wolstenholme the Pairs. The Fours competition was taken to the final stages, the finalists being the Awamoa representatives with two lives, and Phoenix with one life. Singles W. Patterson (Meadowbank) 18, beat J. Brown (Phoenix) 10. These two club champions had previously met twice in the competition, Patterson beating Brown in the third round, and then' losing his first life in the semi-final to the Phoenix representative. Meeting for the third time qn Saturday, Patterson outplayed his opponent in the second half of the game, and won comfortably. The score was 7—7 on the ninth end, but from then onwards Patterson scored on eight ends to his opponent's three. The score was 18—10 in his favour on the second last end. Pairs J. Haggle and W. H. Wolstenholme (Palmerston) 2(1, beat A. L. Harvey anci L. Clark (Weston) 17. Clark started oil with a 4, but lost 3,2, and 4 in alternate ends to be 2 down at the sixth. He then scored a couple of singles and 2’s to be 13—11 at the eleventh, but the Palmerston pair drew level on the next end. They then notched a 5, and with a 3 on the twentieth head put the issue beyond doubt, winning 2G—l7. Fours t The Fours competition was taken to the final stages. Results: First Round.--A. L. Second Round.—Two lives: Meadowbank 1!), West'on 17; Awamoa 17, Phoenix 16; One life: Pukeuri 20, Palmerston 12; Malieno 14, Hampden 13. Palmerston and Hampden were eliminated. Third Round.—Two lives: Awamoa 12, Meadowbank 10. One life: Maheno 18, Pukeuri 18; Phoenix 21, Weston 14. Pukeuri and Weston were eliminated. Fourth*Round.—Two lives: Awamoa 24. one life Maheno 10; Phoenix 18, Meadowbank 17. Maheno ar.d Meadowbank were eliminated. In the game between Phoenix and Meadowbank an extra end had to be played, Robertson (2) and Murray (1) burning the head three times before a decision was reached. Awamoa (two lives) will meet Phoenix (one life) in the final.
