NEW CROPS A SUCCESS

(0.C.) SYDNEY, Dec. 28. The rich New England district of New South Wales has, since the war, become an unofficial centre of crop experimentation. Crops never before attempted on a commercial scale have been grown successfully in the rich volcanic soil and yielded ihe pioneer farmers a handsome pr ifit for their enterprise. Leading the experimental venture is farmer and grazier D. M. Shand, who has established that soya beans, navy beans and sweet corn, among others, can be successfully raised. Soya beans; of which the United States now has 15.000,000 acres under cultivation, and which yield 40 per cent, protein and 18 per cent, oil used as a substitute for linseed in paint manufacture, would become a main agricultural crop in New South Wales, said Mr Shand.
