OBITUARY

MR JOHN HAY Mr John Hay, whose death occurred at Gore recently, was born 78 years ago at West Taieri. where his parents were -pioneer settlers, and owned a small farm. He was educated at the West Taieri and Wairuna Schools, later being employed by the New Zealand Railways as a cleaner. He left this service within a short time to take up.an appointment as a blacksmith at Mataura, where he resided for a number of years. He was later blacksmit'hing at Hillend and on the Gibson Estate at Clifton. In 1925 he came to Dunedin, where, he was employed by the Dunedin Drainage and Sewerage Board. In 1927 he married Mrs L. McElwee, of Dunedin. In 1933 he retired from his position with the Drainage Board, following which he lived a retired life at Clifton, Invercargill, and Gore. Mr Hay was well known to residents in Eastern Southland, and had a good knowledge of the early history of the district. He was keenly interested in horses, and always had a good riding horse and a dog. He was a keen gunman. He was a pioneer member of the Oddfellows’ Lodge at Clinton, but in his moves to various districts in Otago and Southland he lost contact with the movement. In the latter years of his life he was keenly interested in the activities of the Salvation Army. He is survived by his wife, who is a resident of Gore, three brothers and a sister.
