RED CROSS SOCIETY

MEETING OF EXECUTIVE Mr Charles V. Smith presided at the monthly meeting of the executive committee of the New Zealand Red Cross Society. It was reported that parcels for the patients at the Talboys Home and the crippled children had been completed and were shortly to be distributed. The Junior Red Cross organiser s report for November stated that-during the month a case of clothing had been sent from the juniors to the Polish children's camp. The sum of £lO had been sent to the Greek juniors in answer to a direct appeal from Geneva. Concord had had a very successful sale of work and this circle had also visited the children’s wards at the Public Hospital. The Arthur Street School had held a concert and sale recently, when the sum of £l9 was raised. A part of the proceeds will go towards giving each child in the junior school who has a father at the war a Christmas present, the remainder being divided amongst the Sick . and Wounded and Prisoner of War Fund, the Lepers’ Fund, the Crippled. Children Fund, the Occupational Centre and Polish refugees. The Hospital canteen had been well patronised by members of all services, with an increase in the number of men attending on Thursday mornings. The canteen will close from December 21 until January 8. It was reported that guild activities had ceased for the year, and the committee placed on record its appreciation of all members for their regular attendance and excellent work. It was proposed that the guild should reopen towards the end of February. The secretary (Miss Jane Hay) reported on the recent Dominion Council meeting in Wellington. The chairman stated that, following the appeal for clothing for Greece the Otago Centre had forwarded over four tons to Wellington for onward transmission.
