TECHNICAL COLLEGE

MONTHLY MEETING OF BOARD The monthly meeting of the Board of Managers of the King Edward Technical College was held yesterday afternoon, and was attended by Mr J. J. Marlow (chairman), Mrs M. E. Morns, Messrs H. R. Bunn, W. G. Cocking, C. J. Hayward, W. Jaccbsen, J. M. Patrick, and L. Sanderson. The principal (Mr W. G. Aldridge) reported that a grant of £17,188 had been approved for the domestic science block, and a tender had been accepted for the work, which would be undertaken as soon as possible. The principal said that no j confirmation had yet been received concerning the erection of prefabricated buildings at the college. He had despatched an urgent telegram prior to the meeting, and as there had been; promises of more pupils for the coming year than had ever been the case, the provision of adequate accommodation was imperative.—The chairman ,gnd the principal were authorised to take.action for the securing of the classrooms as expeditiously as possible. Dealing with recent staff appointments and resignations, the board considered a letter from the Armed Services Appeal Board, dated November 27, notifying that the appeal on behalf of Mr Li S. White had been dismissed.—A reccmmendation was embodied in the principal’s monthly re-'-.port, which was adopted, that Mr White receive a permanent appointment. He had previously, served in the air force, said the principal, and the circumstances surrounding his recent mobilisation had been very unsatisfactory so far as the board was concerned. His services to the college were. most essential, and it was most unfair that he should be called-up in view of the present serious shortage of teachers.—The chairman said that it was now the Government’s policy to bring back all men with three or more years’ service overseas, and there was little likelihood of retaining single men, who were to reinforce the men returning; The usual bursary donation of £3 3s was received from the Dunedin Builders’ and Contractors’ Industrial Union Of Employees, and an offet of 12 membership tickets was also received from the Dunedin' Athenaeum ' to pupils of the school for proficiency in English and history. \. . . The monthly, report of the principal and also his report for the year,, were adopted. With regard to the entrants for 1945, Mr Aldridge Stated tnat 440 seniors were already enrolled, compared with 392 for the past. year. Enrolments from, primary schools totalled 485, compared with 475 for 1944. There Were at present four positions on the staff which were unfilled. Details of the school’s patriotic accomplishments for the year were incorporated in the report of the Finance Committee. The total sum raised during the year had am:unted to £424 18s lid, of which £290 17s 5d had been raised from the school concert. The total over five years was £IBO9 18s.—The chairman expressed keen ap•preciatiori of the valuable work the pupils and teachers had done in this connection.—Mr Hayward said "it was of interest to state that £BS 8s lid had been realised frem weekly class collections.
