ONE THOUSAND SHIPS

BUILT IN CANADIAN YARDS NINE LAUNCHED ON SATURDAY (Rec. 7 p.m.) OTTAWA; Oct. 22. Nine freighters and warships £ were launched at various shipyards in Canada yesterday on the occasion of the opening of Canada’s seventh victory loan of £361,000,000 . (New Zealand currency). One ship was launched for each of Canada’s nine provinces. The signals for the launching,;- were telephoned by servicemen in Ottawa to their respective wives or,sweethearts stationed in the shipyards. Simultaneously the Government announced that, since the outbreak of the war. Canada has built 1000 Ships, including 500 naval combat vessels and 350 merchant freighters, which, are mostly 10,000-ton vessels. There has not been a single failure in, any of the 1000 ships. One of the vessels launched yesterday was the largest , ever built in Canada. It was a transport destined for large-scale amphibious operations. The 1000th ship produced in Canada is an Algerine class minesweeper, destined for service with the Royal Navy.
