POST-WAR PLANS

THE RAILWAYS DEPARTMENT MINISTER’S VIEWS ON AIR SERVICES (Special) AUCKLAND, Oct. 23. A lot of ground was being covered in the post-wair reconstruction plans of the Railways Department, said the assistant general manager, Mr C. R. Riesop, at the reunion of the Auckland branch of the Railway Officers’ Institute. These plans, he added, were now in the hands of the Minister of Railways, Mr Semple. The provision of new rolling stock and buildings were main features of the plans, but the problem about which the department' felt a great deal of concern was housing for its employees. Arrangements had been made for the Housing Construction Department to build a certain number of State houses for railwaymen each year throughout New Zealand.

Improvement of the road services was also part of the scheme, Mr Riesop continued. There were now very few important road services not under the control of the department. Likely competition from air services was also under consideration. He agreed with the Minister's opinion that, in view of the fact that the State had spent so much on the provision of aerodromes, the Government should operate these sex-vices.
