BALCLUTHA

Milk Supply.—A special meeting of the Balclutha Borough Council was held on Wednesday to consider a petition, bearing 268 signatures, which asked the council to take steps to have the Balclutha Milk Delivery Order amended ko enable vendors not using petrol and tyres to operate within the borough. A motion to that effect was carried. It was moved by Crs Gormack and Wood after considerable discussion. Representatives of the Transport Department, State Advances Corporation, and Rehabilitation Department were then heard in committee. The Mayor (Mr J. T. Walter) has since issued a statement that the council has set up a small committee to negotiate with the solicitors of the parties concerned and the Government departments concerned to see if some satisfactory solution to the present impasse can be achieved.

Rugby Sub-Union.—The final meeting for this year of the South Otago Rugby Sub-union was held on Wednesday night. Mr N. Gallagher being in the chair. The balance-sheet showed that the sub-union was in a satisfactory financial position, and it was decided to repay the £SO borrowed from the Otago Rugby Football Union in 1923. The chairman intimated that next year it was intended to start the season earlier and to hold representative matches and club fixtures at the same' time. Later on the sub-union would consider a proposal to send a team on tour to play North Otago, South Canterbury and Marlborough, as well as Otago and Southland on its return. After the meeting an enjoyable smoke concert was held. Personal.—Mr Wm. Twaddle, senior auctioneer for Messrs Donald Reid and Co., is to retire at the end of the year. He has been a popular figure at auctions in this district for the past 33 years. He served the firm first in the Balclutha district for 25 years, for the last 12 as auctioneer, before being promoted in 1936 to Dunedin as head stock auctioneer.
